My name is Renee Gregory. I have always been told my family came down from Canada at the turn of the century but no one can say anything concretely. My Grandfather was named Borden Gregory and he married a women named Jacqueline Derochement. They were rumored to be a circus family. Does anyone know anything about this? They reportedly moved to Dover New Hampshire for a while before moving elsewhere. If you have any information about this...please let me know.

Subject: Looking for more Gregory's

My name is Nathan Thomas Gregory, Jr. My father was Nathan Thomas Gregory, Sr. My grandfather was Joseph Hampton Gregory. He was Born June 29, 1861, died April 29, 1924. He lived in North Central Kentucky, near the rural community of Tilton, and married Lina S. Hamm.

I have been working about five years trying to compile a genealogy of my family, but thus far have not found any records of anyone before my grandfather. I was greatly pleased to find your web site. I must say, great job.

I have been searching the names list, and do not see any names I can connect with my family. If there is any connection, it probably branches much further back, I presume. Or perhaps the nearest connection lies somewhere in Europe.

Nonetheless, I would like to make contact and explore further, to see if we can identify any possible connections. I can best be reached via email as per below.

Regards,

Nathan Gregory

I am looking for my father, William (Bill) Gregory and any family members that I may have.
I last saw my father in 1942. We lived in Oakland, CA. I believe at an earlier time we also lived in San Francisco, CA. My full name is Barbara Anne Gregory. I am 71--10-07-1936. I was born in San Francisco. My siblings were Dolores Irene, Thomas Anthony and James Allen Gregory. We four attended St. Elizabeth's Parochial School in Oakland. Our grandparents eventually took us to Willits, CA.
I do not know my mother's maiden name. Her first name was Vivian. My maternal grandmother was Irene O'Donnell. She and her husband, George O'Donnell raised us.
I realize that my father is dead by now. He was a good dad, though. I would like to know more about his life. He was a young man when I last saw him, so I am sure there are half-brothers and/or half-sisters.
I would like to get any touch with any member of my family.

Thank you.

William was born Oct 16, 1847 in Tallapoosa County. He married Mary Catherine Lockett on Jan 14, 1869. They had three children: Elizabeth, David Richard and Willie. William died Mar 13, 1874 in Tallapoosa County. Any assistance on either of these two men would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: PEARCY GREGORY KERK/KIRK

Hello, Gregory Cousins!
Needing help here, please. My Stevens Cousin, Malcolm Davis (who lives in Pensacola, too, Dr. Ben!), has called me to see if I have any info on PEARCY GREGORY and her husband BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (B.F.) KERK/KIRK, who are listed in the UNION COUNTY, SC, MARRIAGE RECORDS book (publ. 1995 by Pinckney Dist. Chapter, SC Gen. Soc., Spartanburg, SC, compiled by Tommy Vaughan and Michael Becknell) ---p. 192, Marriage Records from (Union Co., SC) Probate Records:
KIRK, B.F. to GREGORY, Pearcy --- File 50-027
--- that's all the info given.

Of course, I looked on the GREGORYFAMILY.COM website -- found that Pearcy (Pearciful) was daughter of John Jeremiah Gregory and wife Naomi Steen. Nothing much about Pearcy there -- she is listed in her father's will.

Cousin Malcolm is searching for a MITCHELL, another of his lines, in the Benjamin Franklin and Pearcy (Gregory) KIRK family.

Can any of you offer any help here?

Many thanks!

The three sons of James N. who married Elizabeth were James William b. 12 May 1877 d. 16 June 1946 married Jurella Myers, Rufus Sanford b. 6 April 1879 d. 20 Oct,1933 married Emma Everidge and Wesley Andrew b. 17 May 1875 d. 12 Jan 1943 married Zenora Jarvis. Subject: Gideon Gregory

I am the g-g-g-grandson of Gideon Gregory. He first shows up in the 1850 Greene County TN census with his wife "Anna B.". At this time the only information I have is from an eccentric 80 year old cousin who states that he remembers stories about Gideon and Anna not actually being married. They allegedly came together in North Carolina (sorry, don't know what county) in 1820. Eccentric cousin also states that he remembers that Anna was full blooded Cherokee. this could be one reason I haven't been able to find any marriage documemtation. The closest thing I have come up with to date is the Barren County Kentucky marriage bond for his son, Joseph Henderson Gregory and Agnes Denton, listing them both as "of color". I am told that was common for part indian applicants at the time. I have beat my brains out trying to find any more information on this. If anyone out there has any more info, give me a holler!

I am looking for my 4th great grandfather, James S. Gregory. From an old family bible which is no longer available a family member trascribed this information: James S. Gregory and wife Mary McDonough had son Ivey Williams Gregory born 21 Dec 1808 at Onlsow Co., N.C. he married Lucinda Turner who was born 8 Jan 1813 from Burke Co., GA They are both burried in Stewart Co., GA.
From 'A Gregory Colonial Family' by Ben T. Gregory, MD it states that William E. Gregory's children were James S., Washington, Macy, and Benjamin Gregory. There are no dates associated with this or location. Would anyone know more about the family of William E. Gregory? And in particular his son James S. Gregory?

From: Kay Bachmann
Subject: Willis, William, and Ashton Gregory
Date: Sun, 2 Oct 2005

I have Celia Gregory alleged to have been the wife of William Thomas, having a number of children including my ancestor, Lewis Ashton Thomas [or Lewis Ashton Minor Thomas, depending on the source of the information]. In a Jones County NC law suit, Vann v. Hargett, 1831, the children of Mary Ann Gregory [daughter of Joseph Gilbert, of Jones County, d. 1784], and her husband John Gregory were listed as follows: Levicy Gregory[m. William Armstrong], Penelope Gregory [m. John Vann], Willis Gregory, Ashton Gregory, Elizabeth [married Samuel Smith], Polly[died without issue], William, Lewis, Allen[died without issue] and Joseph [died without issue].

Willis, Aston, Eliza, Polly, William, Lewis, Allen and Joseph were all born after 1784. The excerpt on line of this action indicated that as of the time of the action, 1831, William and Ashton were both living in South Carolina. This appears to be a mistranslation because later the excerpt indicates that William Gregory was in Alabama. I suspect that it should have said that 'Willis and Ashton were living in South Carolina.'

It seems likely that Willis, son of John Gregory and Mary Ann Gilbert, was the same Willis that Jack Gregory mentioned as his ancestor in his 1999 Union address. Does anyone know?

There is no mention in the excerpt of a Celia Gregory among the children of this couple, yet the heir of Celia Gregory [m. a Smith] were mentioned as entitled to a part of the property in question. Does anyone know whether Celia Gregory was part of this family, and if so, whether she might have been married to a Thomas at some point?

My ancestor William Thomas was said to be from Duplin County, which is very near Jones County where John and Mary Ann's children were born. Given that one of William Thomas's and Celia Gregory's children was named 'Lewis Ashton Thomas', this might suggest that he had been named for two of Celia's brothers.

Any one out there with any info of this or any other Celia Gregory born near Duplin County, NC sometime close to 1780? Thanks,

Kay

I have been told that the first wife of Mabry Baldwin was Nancy Gregory. They would have married around 1834, perhaps earlier. It has been said that they had one child. I have not been able to find supporting data to these statements, made by other researchers.

Hello....My name is Roseann Christofileas Coppola. My grandmother was Annie Gregory from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Any information you can provide would be so wonderful, I just discovered this site this morning after speaking with my Uncle about his memories of his mother, and uncles from South Carolina. Well here goes...the info I have is my grandmother Annie Gregory born approx 1898... her mother was Laura Gregory and her father was either James or Arthur Gregory ***yes they were both Gregory's who were married and widowed ...Annie is the only child between them...I am told there were a total of thirteen half brothers and sisters, the children of laura and james/arthur..... one of Annie's brothers was named Jack..he owned a grocery store and a railroad yard, never married, no children...another brother was Fred...possibly had a daughter Doris...and several other children. The story is my grandmother Annie met George Christofileas during or shortly after the first world war...they were married in 1919 and moved tp New York City, had four children Rose, James,Alex, and John. We have some pictures of James (my father) as a toddler on a farm, Uncle Jack on his farm perhaps.
Well I hope to hear from someone, when I told my father about this he was so HAPPY!! Looking forward to any info.

I am trying to determine the parents of Martha 'Patsey' Gregory who married Andrew Jackson Mitchell in Union Co., SC. Patsey was born 7 Sep 1847 in SC and died 14 Dec 1883 in SC. The only match is the Patsey Gregory that is listed with the Edward & Nancy Gregory family in the 1850 Union Co., SC census. The following are listed:
Edward Gregory Sr. 66
Nancy 65
Margaret 28
Solomon 24
Jerard 22
Andrew 7
Patsey 3

I saw your listing on gregoryfamily.com the children for Edward and Nancy. Patsey was not listed. Do you know anything about this Patsey Gregory?
One clue is in the 1900 Union Co., SC census. Solomon Gregory (son of Edward & Nancy) is listed with the youngest son of Andrew J. Mitchell and Patsey Gregory, David and his wife. David is listed as 'nephew' to Solomon Gregory. The Mitchell family Bible lists Patsey as Martha M. Gregory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Kitty Gregory

Hi,
I was wondering if their was any way that I could get in touch with Kitty Gregory Dalhberg ? I am thinking that her Mother (Mae) is my grandfathers sister. My grandfathers name was William Plemmons, he died in 1928, so their was very little that my Dad knew of the Plemmons side. He always sent cards to Mildred Pharr, which was his cousin. I tried to get in touch with her when my Dad died, on 1-25-2003, much to my surprise, I found out in the Union paper that she passed away a few weeks before him.
Daddy always talked about Aunt Mae, Mildred, Maggie and Mack. If there is any way that she could contact me I would be very happy, to see if she knows my grandparents Mom and Dads name.

I have recently found my gggg grandfather, Charles Gregory b. Jan. 3, 1793. He was born In South Carolina and as a young man moved to Georgia and married Sarah Elon of Savanah, GA b. Oct. 10, 1794. After participating in the War of 1812, Charles and Sarah moved several times before landing in Elmore Co, AL. I have the links from Charles to the present, but have no information about his life previous to the War and their marriage on Oct. 23, 1819. Does anyone know of a Charles (either B. or W.) Gregory that disappeared from South Carolina between 1793 and 1812? I feel like I'm getting close, but am now stuck!

I noticed that you have Frances' parents as Miles and Mary Ferguson. My gggrandfather was Samuel Ferguson (1811-1889,SC). His first wife was Lucinda McCrary, daughter of George Brandon McCrary and Frances 'Frankey' Ferguson.

Samuel and Lucinda had a daughter Frances Parmelia, b.1839, who I have as being married to Warren Simpson Gregory. This is through family recollections and other genealogical sites. My lineage is through Samuel and Lucinda's son Christopher Columbus Ferguson (b.1837), Charles Madison Ferguson (b.1866), and Beulah Wade Ferguson (b.1901) - my mother.

I have several Miles Fergusons in the family, but the one mentioned, married to Mary (actually Mary Beasley), was born in 1768, and died in 1830.

Could you let me know the basis for your information - maybe we can clear up a misunderstanding.

Lucinda McCrary Ferguson died in childbirth in 1848 and Samuel then married Agnes Philson - daughter of William and Agnes Parker Philson - born in PA.

I would appreciate any info. you can send. Thanks,

He supposedly was born in 1774, place unknown. He moved to Rutherford County, TN and then on to Lawrence County, AL where he died in 1848. He could possibly have had brothers named Edward and Andrew. These names are prevalent in the line and I have found these names in the Rutherford County, TN files.

I found the person I was looking for on a Gregory web site. My father's cousin Vesta Crim was married to Orion Arville Steen. Orion had a brother Ellis Morton Steen. I am trying to find proof he was the same Ellis M. Steen who was the first full-time pastor at Fifth Presbyterian Church, Springfield, IL in the early 1900s. I went to that church, while our Steen relatives attended 3rd Presbyterian Church. I recall going to Orion and Vesta's home several times when I was a child, but I do not recall ever hearing his brother had been a pastor back in the early days of my church. If you have access to any insight into this matter, I would appreciate it. (Actually, if I ever get around to getting out my pre-Christmas letters, I can ask Orion's daughter-in-law, ggrandson, 2 daughters, etc. I don't know if they would know. They are no longer here in the midwest.)

It appears like my James S. Gregory was born abt 1790 SC. This is going by census records for Fayette Co., AL 1830, 1840, 1850.
He was listed on the 1850 Fayette Co AL census with wife Martha b 1810 SC and children Elmira, Cicero, Mary, Margaret, John, Martha and possibly a Joseph that was listed on the 1840 Fayette Co AL census along with James S. Gregory.
Their daughter Elmira name was Amanda Elmira b 1829 Merengo Co., AL She married James Allen Bannister b 1825 SC in Fayette Co., AL or Marion Co., AL There were older children not listed on the 1850 census. Believe one to be Ellender (Nelly) Gregory married to Isaac P. Allred in Fayette Co., AL.

I was hoping that somewhere in your Gregory family research you may have ran across him.
I have noticed that there was a James S. Gregory that was the son of William E. Gregory possible son of John Gregory. Could this James S. Gregory be my James S. Gregory b 1790 SC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

James 38
Ruthy 42
Elizabeth 18
Mary A 16
William A 14
Joseph A 11
Lucinda 5.
They next appeared on the 1860 Owen Cty, IN census as follows:
James J 49
Ruth 53
Mary A 24
Wm A 23
Rebeca J 20
Jos M 19
Lucinda 15

By the 1870 IN census, James was remarried to Elizabeth Myers Gregory, was living in Daviess Cty, IN and had Jamison S. age 3 and Martha age 1. No other children are listed.
In 1880, Elizabeth and the two children were in Monroe Cty, IN and James is not mentioned, presumably deceased though I am able to find no record of his death.
James is my great grandfather and I would appreciate any information regarding him, his parents, his birth and/or death.

Thank you, Roxa Gregory

My name is Barbara Anne Gregory, my sis was Dolores Irene Mischke (nee Gregory) and my brothers were Thomas Anthony Gregory and James Allen Gregory. Dolores (DEE) was married to Brian Mischke who was from Detroit. Brian was in the Marines during the late 60's and early 70's. They had one child, Kathleen Mischke. My brother Tom died at age 32 without any children. My brother, Jim Gregory, is married to Mary Gregory and they have three children, Scott, Steven and Susan. There are a number of grandchildren on my brother's side. The four of us were born in San Francisco, CA. Our father was Bill (William?) Gregory. He was then married to our mother, Vivian O'Donnell. Our maternal grandmother was Irene O'Donnell. I've had two marriages; the first to Billy Wells, born in Hoxie Arkansas and the second to Robert Lowry Swift, born in MdKeesPort, Michigan. Our children are Marguerite Swift, born January 11, 1969, Jack Richard Swift, born January 25, 1970 and Kim Dee Swift, born August 31, 1972. I have two grandson, Joshua and David Swift. My son, Jack Swift, was married to Elissa Cordaway, born August 31, 1972 and Elissa now has a third little boy, Ulysses Flores. His father, Marco Flores, has returned to Mexico.

Keep up the fantastic work!

His father Joseph Gregory born in 1738 was probably from Maryland as his 2nd wife Amy Amanda Sartain was from Queens Co, Md. I was wondering if there is a connection with your Gregory Family. Hello. My name is Sandra Arelene Gregory and I have a lot of Gregory info that could be added to the site. I was born on June 27th 1960 in San Bernardino, California to Gerald Eugene Gregory and my mother Delores Arelene Gregory (maiden name Tayler). My father Gerald was born August 7th 1928 and died July 14th 1981 in Ely, Nevada. He is buried in a cemetary in Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, Ca.
I also have a half brother Michael Lee Gregory, born November 17th or 18th 1949, whereabouts unknown. He has three children that I know of, Merilyn, Matthew and Meredeth.
Gerald's father was Phillip Allen Gregory Jr. (deceased in the early 70's), married to Isma Fay (died in 1959). Gerald's siblings were Lorna Estella Gregory, Elmer Allen Gregory and Earl Daniel Gregory, all deceased (death dates are unknown at this time).
Lorna was married to Robert Nord and resided in Minnesota at her time of death in Rochester. She had at least 2 children, Rollinda and Robert Jr.
Elmer died in the mid 90's in San Bernardino, California. He had 4 children and 2 stepchildren: Debra Marie, Dorothy, Carroll Allen, and Donald Allen. Carroll Allen died in July of 1999. He had no children. The remaining children are living.
Earl died in the 80's and had 3 or 4 children. One of the girls names was Gail. I, Sandra have twins, a boy Justin William Morain and a girl Corey Michele Morain. Also my great grandmother's name was Effie Gregory. She died in the early 80's. She was 104. I believe she was a resident of Lomita, Ca., burial place unknown.

Hope this helps someone including myself.

Subject: GREGORYS

Hello. I am writing from Birmingham UK and wonder if anyone can help me with details of my cousin's paternal family. His name is Richard (Rick) Gregory, b1955 Providence, Rhode Island.

Rick's grandfather was Howarth Lynn Gregory, b 16th September 1885 possibly at Hobbs Lane, Edgeworth, Lancashire UK. He died May 1969 Providence RI. On 12th January 1918, he married Maud Lotty Cramp in North Providence RI. She was born 7th October 1887 Coalville, Leicestershire UK. She died 24th December 1918 at which time she was living at 17 Bloomingdale Ave, Pawtucket RI. They had a son - Howarth Lynn Jnr - father of Rick. When Maud died, Howarth Snr brought Howarth Jnr back to England where he lived with Maud's parents for five years and until Howarth Snr re-married and sent for him to return to the US. Snr returned from this trip on the Carmania to Ellis Island from Liverpool on 8th November 1919. At that time, he was living at 16 Tenth St, Providence RI.

Howarth Lynn Snr's father was John Gregory b1849 Cheshire UK. He was a bleacher of fabrics. John married Hannah Thomasina White b abt 1848 Manchester UK and she died aged about 83. They had five children living with them at Hob Lane Brk House, Edgeworth, Lancashire UK, in 1881:
Harry b1873; Mary Janet b1875; Charles b1876; Frank b1878; Ethel Kate b1881. The first 4 were born Entwistle, Lancashire UK and Ethel Kate was born in Edgeworth, Lancashire.

John and Hannah had 21 children altogether including possibly two sets of twins. The names of four of the others were Jack, May, Jenny and, of course, Howarth Lynn. I cannot find when John and Hannah emigrated to the US and we think there's a possibility that John was refused entry due to ill health and that Hannah stayed there alone with the children.

If there's anyone who can give me any information at all, I shall be more than grateful.

Please e-mail me at janemclean01@aol.com. Look forward to hearing from you.

I recently found my great-great grandfather William Thomas Gregory, born Jan. 10, 1862 and died Jan. 5, 1944, age 82.
STORY: Thomas was born in Union S.C., his father was named Thomas Gregory, he was in the civil war and was killed around 1862 and did not return home; my gg grandfather said he never saw his father.

There is a simular Thomas Gregory from Union S.C. mentioned on page 266 in 'A Gregory Colonial Family' that was speculated to have killed in war between the States.

I am having trouble connecting William Thomas Gregory to any Gregory family in Union County. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I have on my Gregorys, all of whom, to my knowledge, are of Pennsylvania origin.

Alfred Gregory
Charles Gregory (b: 10 Aug 1798; d: 14 Mar 1873) m. Frances Otterman
George Washington Gregory (b: 9 Jul 1824; d: 11 Aug 1899) m. Tabitha Dennis Ewing
Edgar Sanford Gregory (b: 1 Mar 1869; 20 July 1937) m./2 Bertha Mabel Thompson
Martha Emily Gregory (b: 28 Oct 1919; d: 11 Dec 1999) m. Ernest Francis Johns

Charles, George and Edgar are buried in the Freeport Memorial Cemetery in Freeport, Armstrong County, PA. It is reported that my grandmother, Bertha Mabel Thompson. traveled to Chester County in order to marry Edgar Sanford Gregory. Perhaps, that is the route this family took to arrive in Armstrong County.

Although I own the bible of Alfred Gregory, it does not provide any clues to his origin, marriage, etc.

According to family lore, this Gregory line is Scot or English.

If anyone has any knowledge of this family, I would certainly appreciate correspondence. Thank you very much.

Hi,

I have ancestors in Cades Cove. I have an old picture of a group of some of the folks in Cades Cove probably taken around 1920. On the back is a list of names, but there are fewer names than there are people in the picture. I was wondering if you might be able to identify any of the people. I know which ones are Sarah, Almine, Flausey and Fannie, and the old gentlemen I am assuming is Jim Cable, but haven't a clue about the rest of the people. Do you know any of these folks?

Mary Cable
Reba Cable
Jim Cable
Sarah Wilcox
Almine (Elmina)
Flausey (Flossie)
Fannie Wilcox
In parenthesis is the spelling of Almine's and Flausey's names on their grave markers. Sarah, Almine, Flausey and Fannie are all buried in the Cable Cemetery in the cove. Click here to see picture. In the front row left to right is Almine, then Flausey and Fannie OR Fannie and Flausey? Twins and I don't know which is which and Sarah Margaret Gregg Wilcox.

I am a descendant of Sarah (Gregg) Wilcox. Her daughter Elizabeth is my grandmother. She married John Quiet, son of Henry Clay Quiett who also lived in the cove for a short while around 1900. Would be interested in any information you might have on the Quiet/Quite/Quiett family as well.

Does anyone have Gregory connections in Johnson County NE; Lyon County KS, or Prower County CO? Earlier family might have been in DeKalb IL. I am searching for a Cozier Gregory and a Roy Gregory. I think Cozier's wife's name was Meari. There is possibly a first and second generation of Cozier Gregory's. I believe they may have participated in Rodeo competitions. I have pictures of Cozier II doing fancy rope demonstration. The time period would have been mid 1800'a for generation 1 and late 1800's for no. 2. There is a picture of possibly Cozier 1 with horse doing a trick. Both Roy and Cozier 2 are pictured several times on horseback and with the "shaggy" chaps. I believe the senior Coziers ranched near Granada, CO. I believe there may be a connection to Tibbets and Williams families or the Rowe and King families. They may have lived for a time near Vesta or Tecumseh NE and/or Allen KS. I found a marriage for a Cozier Tibbets m. Mariah Tibbets, 1865, DeKalb County IL. I would really love to make a connection to one of these families. I have numerous pictures I would be glad to scan and share with any family members. One other possibility is that there might be a Canada connection for these Gregory's as there is a post card posted from Canada from one of them.

Subject: Russell Gregory of Cades Cove, TN

I am looking for information on a Russell Gregory that came into Cades Cove, TN. He is listed in the 1850 census in Cades Cove. He owned property in Blount County, TN in 1830. His father was said to be a John Gregory from South Carolina or North Carolina. The stories handed down was that he came with a brother from the Carolinas to buy land for lumbering. Reported to have came from PA prior to Carolina. One of the sites in Cades Cove, TN, part of the Smokies, is named Gregory Bald.

Any suggestions??

Thank you in advance for any help. I want to find the rest of my relatives.

I have been able to trace my Gregory line back to a Sarah (Sallie) Gregory who along which her son John Q. A. Gregory and Francis (Frank) Walter Gregory appear in the 1850 census in Lexington County, South Carolina in the household of Barbara Wessinger. Three years later Miss Wessinger conveyed most of her land to Frank Gregory, luckily the deed was not recorded, or rerecorded until 1877 so its details survived the loss of the records in the Civil War.

Frank Gregory (1832-1890 or 94) and Mary R. Wilson (1839-1920) begat:
Alice Gregory, married Adam Shull
John Gregory, Married Ida Shull
Sallie A.E. Gregory (1865-1928) married Jefferson Davis Shull (1862-1902)
Dollie Gregory (1870-1906)
Seymour Gregory (1872-1918), was married
Berley (Buck) Gregory married a woman named Pinkey.

Would be interested in comparing notes with other researchers.

I have been looking for the birth dates of Frank and Minnie as well as place and date of death. There are several Alberts and Franks but none of them fit the time frame or marriage. I do know that they had siblings named Walter D., Robert, Thima, Jean.
In 1920 cencus put Albert in Akron, Ohio then he moved back to Pennsylvania. The cencus also either misspelled or have it right that Albert was married to Jennie, last name not stated.
I have hit a dead end at this point and can use all the help I can get.

Subject: John Gregory born Daviess County, IN 1814

I descend through another early Daviess County Gregory. John Gregory, my 3rd Great Grandfather was born 1814 in Indiana. He married Nancy Stafford in Daviess County, IN in April 21 1836.
John and Nancy had the following children:
Mary 1837
Rachel 1838
William 1842
Ganzada 1844
John Talbert 1846
Jeremiah 1847
Prisilla 1848
Isaac 1851
Martha 1852
Elizabeth 1859

As John was born in 1814 in Indiana could he have been a son of Jeremiah? In the 1870 census John notes that his father was born in South Carolina. I know there was a Jeremiah in Daviess County in 1820 as noted in the following excerpt from

In September 24, 1833 Probate Court Records of Daviess county, Indiana Letters of administration were given to John (McCafferty) in re of the estate of Nathan Kirkland deceased. Jeremy Gregory gave bond of $1200 security. Heirs, Sara Kirkland and Samual Kirkland, minor. John McCafferty was appointed guardian of Samuel.

I also have a website with specifics of this family at http://www.souldesire.com

I may have a picture of Bushy Creek Gregory? Perhaps you have one already?

Subject: Joseph Gregory Descendants
Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999

Hello! I thoroughly enjoyed the Gregory Family web site. Hats off to all those involved in the research and reproduction of the information. Unfortunately, I did not find my Gregory connections.

My family lore starts with four Gregory brothers -- Samuel, Joseph, William and James -- who were of Scottish origin and arrived in America in 1682 from England aboard the ship "Welcome". These four brothers initially went to Penn's colony as they were interested in his ideas. However, one of the brothers left for New Amsterdam, one left for Westmoreland County, VA, and two stayed with William Penn.

My ggggg-grandfather, Joseph, was of the Virginia branch of the Gregory's. He is supposedly the youngest brother of Roger Gregory who was the husband of Mildred Washington. (Yes, my family has the same story about being related to George Washington's family). Joseph was killed by Indians leaving his son Samuel an orphan. I know nothing of Joseph's wife. Samuel was raised by neighbors in Westmoreland County, VA.

Samuel was probably 19 when he served in the Virginia Militia. He was born circa 1757-1760 and died October 8, 1842. He married a neighbor girl, Sarah Davis, in 1787 and moved with her to Boone County, KY. Their first son James Gregory was born in 1788. In 1795, Samuel and family migrated to Ohio and became one of the earliest pioneers in Butler County. Today a creek near his land still bears the name Gregory Creek. There were four sons and five daughters from this marriage. Two of these daughters migrated into Fountain County, Indiana in 1826. Sarah Esther Gregory was married to William McClure. Eventually, Samuel's family all migrated to Indiana except for two sons and one daughter that died in Ohio.

If anyone has any information about Joseph and/or Samuel, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks.

I answered a query from a distant relative in California who was looking for Edward Pinkney Gregory whose list of children included my husband's grandfather James William Gregory as well other names we recognized. We have been to cemeteries where both are buried.

My husband's father was also named Edward Pinkney after his grandfather. The relative in California sent information showing the first E.P being born in Guilford, Vermont in 1827. There is a great documentation in the CA information. The genealogy is this:

  1. Daniel MacGregor (Scotland)
  2. Isaac Gregory,Sr.(he changed the name)
  3. Isaac Jr.(Deacon)Gregory
  4. Captain Stephen Gregory
  5. Edward Pinkney Gregory
  6. James William Gregory
  7. Edward Pinkney Gregory(2)
  8. James William Gregory(2), my husband.
However, our niece has found information showing Edward Pinkney Gregory on the census listing birth in Union County, South Carolina in January 20, 1827. He is also shown to have served the Confederates. He migrated through GA, AL, TX. One child John was born in GA. Most were born in AL. and the last two born in TX. The list of children that E.P. and Edna Martin (b. November 13, 1833 in GA) had were:
John b.1853; Dialtha b.1855; Loving b. 1857: William M b.1859; Asa b. 1860; Matallis Antippie (I remember her. She was called "Aunt Pink"); Fannie b. November 5, 1865; Hairm(also Hiram) Harrison b.1868; Charles b. 1870; Hudie b. 1872; James William b. 1874; Hattie b. 1878.

These are the same children the Vermont Edward Pinkney is shown to have. I wonder if both names Edward Pinkney refer to the same person or different persons. Could Edward Pinkney have migrated from Vermont to South Carolina and given false information to the census because of the enmity between North and South? It would have been politically correct. It would also been safer for him and his family to be "Southern."

Any help will greatly appreciated.

Subject: Question regarding Gregory Web site

I have been searching for information on my great great grandmother and grandfather for two years. We had no written history in our family, just a lot of tid bits pasted down by word of mouth. I thought that the names I was searching for were L.P. Osborn and Mrs. Jane Scaggs. However, there were certain people that I had heard about that I couldn't find in the census records - Monroe Osborn for one.

Today I accidentally stumbled on this site and many of the questions I was at a dead end with have been answered. I never could figure out who Monroe's mother was, since L.P. and Jane Scaggs Osborn only had two surviving children - my great grandfather Jessie Osborn and his older brother, Lee. The funny thing is that Clarence Gregory (1888-1967) lived just down the road from us when I was growing up. The house is gone now, but I still remember it - it was a stately, Victorian-looking home.

I would appreciate any information that you could provide on Amanda (Cornelia) Gregory and her marriage to L.P. Osborn. I would think that she is buried in Macedonia Cemetery, but I'll have to check that out.

Thanks,

Subject: Hi about the Gregory Site a question
Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000

I have been researching my Gregory family roots for a long time and have a mysterious Gregory. His name was Eliphes (yes, I have posted about him on your forum). His whole name was: Eliphes Berry Gregory.
Is it possible he is the son of Berry Adolphus Gregory? I find it very coincidental that he was named Eliphes..if you look at the history of Berry Adolphus.
Eliphes was in his mid 50's in 1913 when he married my great grandmother so his age would have been right. He was also called "E.B. Gregory". A record of his marriage to my great grandmother appears in the Giles County court records. Also, I have a picture of him on their wedding day.

Could you please look up the name of Berry Adolphus child..I see you show no record of when this child died. Is it possible he simply left the area before 1900?

Thanking you ahead of time,

Maggie
